Hiriketiya is one of the nicest beaches to surf at. There is only one quiet road closeby, which gives it a relaxed vibe and plenty of space for new cafés and restaurants. 'Hiri' is a horseshoe shaped cove with a heavy reef and a beach break – there's something for beginners and pros.
It takes around 40 minutes with a TukTuk to get to Hiriketiya from Villa TiLa, along the beach road through Tangalle town, where you can stop and grab some snacks or fruits on the way.
There's a lot going on in Hiriketiya, which makes it a fun place for a day trip or a fantastic meal & cocktails at Smoke & Bitters.
The beach is lined with surf schools and board rentals, make sure to try it out while there – it is quickly becoming the new hotspot in Sri Lanka.
Kudawella is even closer to us than Hiriketiya and is a fantastic spot for beginners. From November to March, Kudawella offers some lovely waves, especially for those with kids. The surf school in Kudawella is ranked highly and surf lessons can be arranged by us. The drive to Kudawella from Villa TiLa takes around 35 minutes.
Mawella Lagoon is right next to Kudawella, and kayaking on the lagoon is a great alternative, if surfing is not your thing.
Unakurawa lies just outside Tangalle town and is a small horseshoe bay with some great waves for beginners. The beach stretch is still in the early stages of its development and is a quiet area with only a few local eateries around.
The right hander at this deep horseshoe bay can make for a fantastic surf, but the waves are not as consistent as they are in Hiriketiya. So make sure to bring a book or some goggles. You'll be able to rent a surf board there, so make sure to check out the waves beforehand. The drive home to Villa TiLa takes around 25 minutes.
